Thank you for your interest in solar heating. We want to help you make the right decision about solar energy and whether it is right for you and your project. The short answer is, you will need a South facing location somewhere on your property, you will need to be or to hire a reasonably skilled handyperson, and you will need to be willing to make an investment that will pay itself back many times over.

What is it like to build a solar heating system?
Whether you are building new or retrofitting an existing home the work is very satisfying and can often be done by a reasonable skilled “do-it yourselfer.” Some experience in the trades of carpentry, roofing, plumbing, copper pipe fitting and electrical work will be useful, but these skills need not be at a high technical level.

What kind of solar system is right for me, solar thermal or solar electric? Which is better?
Both kinds of systems are good, but one might be better for you. It is almost never a good idea to make heat from electricity, so if you are looking to heat your home or domestic hot water, solar thermal collectors are the far more efficient and cost effective choice.

Can I just add solar collectors to my existing heating system?
Unfortunately, there are fundamental differences between solar heating systems and typical fossil fuel systems that are difficult to overcome. But you may be able to add a solar heating system to your home and use your existing heating system as a back up.

What kind of things can I do with solar energy?
You can provide domestic hot water, make underfloor radiant heat, heat a pool and melt snow. You can even use extra solar energy to improve your garden!
What will a solar heating system look like on my home?
You have probably seen solar panels on the roof of a home, but that is not your only option! Solar collectors can be mounted upon the garage, or a woodshed, storage shed, or pool cabana. You can use array of solar collectors as a fence and landscape it nicely.

Does Radiantec qualify for tax credits and other incentive programs in my area?
The federal government and many state governments have enacted tax credits and other incentives that could lower the cost of your solar energy system considerably. Radiantec has good credentials in the solar energy industry and we meet the requirements of the major code authorities. As long as your project meets the program requirements for the incentive you are interested in, you should be good to go.
